Sleep has a very important role in body restoration. Among its contributions are thermoregulation, tissue and muscle recovery, and the most important is energy conservation. The number of hours of sleep would depend on the individual but the average sleep is between 7 to 8.5 hours per day. Numerous studies would also reveal the relevance of sleep in increasing learning capabilities and memory enhancement. Researchers believe that the capacity to consolidate memories happen during sleep. Hence, during sleep new memories are formed, no matter what type of memory it is. Studies would hypothesize that lack of sleep has general effects on alertness and attention or selective effects on certain brain structures and functions.

Researches, studies and literatures had theorized and tested the mechanism and effect of sleep to neurological functions. However, its effects depending on the age of the person as well as gender would vary and remains unclear. Though the definite role of sleep in cognitive and neurologic function has its uncertainties, what is certain is that sleep is a biological necessity. It should not be neglected because it may not hit you abruptly but surely it will have an effect as time pass by.
