For centuries, our culture has been enamored with the “Fountain of Youth”. Not the literal fountain of course. But the idea that it’s scientifically possible to grow younger at the cellular level and live longer, healthier lives. As it turns out, increasing one’s longevity is not only possible, but is supported by a multitude of clinical studies. This can make looking and feeling years younger than your true age an actual reality. In this article, we cover 7 simple ways you can naturally increase your longevity from the comfort of home.
Let’s put aside what types of food you are eating at the moment. Did you know that reducing your daily calorie consumption by as little as 10% can potentially increase life span?1 While making healthy eating choices are important, don’t overlook the power of simply reducing how much you eat.
Making nuts a regular part of your diet is a great way to boost your longevity. Nuts are loaded with beneficial nutrients, including protein, vitamins and minerals, and antioxidants. One study found that people who ate at least 3 servings of nuts per week had a 39% lower risk of premature death.2 Plus, nuts can make for a delicious, healthy snack that keeps your appetite at bay.
It’s a known fact that we tend to pick up habits from our friends and people we spend a lot of time around. So if you’re spending significant time with friends who practice unhealthy habits, you may want to reconsider.3 While it may not make sense to cut these people out of your life, at least be mindful of these unhealthy habits so you don’t pick them up.
Now here’s one most of us can get on board with! Research shows taking regular naps can work wonders for living a longer, healthier life. In fact, one study showed that people who took regular naps were 37% less likely to die of heart disease.4 Researchers speculate this is due to naps reducing levels of stress hormones.
We know drinking too much alcohol is bad for our health. But according to research, drinking moderate amounts of wine can be beneficial. One 29-year study revealed that men who drank wine were 34% less likely to die a premature death compared to men who preferred beer or liquor.5 Scientists believe this longevity-enhancing benefit of wine is due to its rich antioxidant and polyphenol content.
Since we’re on the topic of drinks, coffee or tea are other longevity-boosting beverages you may want to consider. Tea, especially green tea, is chock full of polyphenols and catechins. These nutrients can help reduce risk of diabetes and heart disease. Other studies have shown drinking coffee or tea can reduce risk of early death by 20 to 30%.6 Just be careful with how much caffeine you consume, especially if you have high blood pressure or heart trouble. Don’t exceed more than 400mg of caffeine (4 cups of coffee) per day.
It’s no secret that getting enough sleep is vitally important to our health. Studies show that less than 5 to 7 hours of sleep each night increases risk of early death by 12%. But studies show the opposite is true as well. In fact, getting more than 8 to 9 hours of sleep per night can shorten lifespan up to 38%. In general, you want to aim for 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep per night.7 No more, no less.
As you can see, it’s relatively simple to increase your longevity and live a longer, healthier life. The key is staying consistent and being disciplined.
